Youth Town Hall with Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly: Engaging the Next Generation in Global Affairs

On November 10, 2022, young leaders from across the community gathered for a Youth Town Hall with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, in an event co-hosted by Porte Impact Fund and PACM Group (Holdings) Limited. The event served as a unique platform for direct engagement between youth and one of Canada’s top policymakers, allowing for an open discussion on leadership, foreign affairs, and Canada’s evolving role in the Indo-Pacific region.

A Platform for Youth Voices

The town hall was designed to bridge the gap between young Canadians and decision-makers, ensuring that youth perspectives are included in discussions about Canada’s foreign policy and global strategy. Attendees, composed of students, young professionals, and emerging leaders, had the opportunity to ask Minister Joly questions, share their concerns, and gain first-hand insight into the challenges and priorities shaping Canada’s diplomatic agenda.

Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy: A Key Focus

A major theme of the discussion was Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy, which Minister Joly outlined as a cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy direction. She highlighted:

  • Strengthening diplomatic partnerships within the Indo-Pacific region.

  • The importance of youth engagement in shaping global leadership.

  • How Canada’s economic, political, and security interests are tied to the future of the Indo-Pacific.

The conversation reinforced Canada’s commitment to expanding international cooperation and preparing the next generation of leaders to take an active role in global affairs.

Leadership Insights from Minister Joly

Beyond policy discussions, Minister Joly shared personal insights into leadership, diplomacy, and public service, emphasizing the need for resilient, adaptable, and forward-thinking leaders in today’s world. Her engagement encouraged attendees to think critically about their own roles in shaping international discourse and contributing to Canada’s global influence.

Collaborative Efforts in Youth Engagement

The Porte Impact Fund and PACM Group (Holdings) Limited played a crucial role in bringing this event to life. Their joint effort in hosting the town hall demonstrated a commitment to youth empowerment, leadership development, and international engagement—values that align with Canada’s vision for a more inclusive and globally connected future.
